Rising from the Gironde estuary, Cordouan Lighthouse is a masterpiece of maritime architecture. Accessible by boat, it is one of France’s most striking UNESCO-listed sites.
The Cordouan Lighthouse, often referred to as the ‘Versailles of the Seas’, has guided sailors through the Gironde estuary for over 400 years. It is the only offshore lighthouse in the world that is still inhabited by keepers and open to visitors.
First built in the late 16th century and later redesigned in the 18th century, Cordouan is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Accessible only by boat, visits are organised as guided tours.
