About the Artist
Jason Phu lives and works in Sydney and Melbourne. He studied at the College of Fine Arts UNSW and in Nova Scotia and Beijing. His multi-disciplinary practice brings together a wide range of references from traditional ink paintings to street art, everyday vernacular to official records, personal narratives to historical events. Working across drawing, installation, painting and performance, Phu frequently uses humour as a device to explore experiences of cultural dislocation. He often uses the stories of ghosts, spirits, demons and gods in Chinese culture as a personification of these concepts.
Phu was the winner of the Sir John Sulman Prize (2015) and he has been a finalist in the Sir John Sulman Prize (2019, 2018), Ramsay Art Prize (2017), the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship (2016), the Archibald Prize (2015, 2014) and was the recipient of the inaugural Art Assembly commission for the Sydney Opera House in 2019. He is a current Gertrude Contemporary Studio artist.
Join our Artist in Residence for an evening in conversation with Perth Festival’s Visual Arts Curator, Annika Kristensen. They will be discussing Phu’s practice and the inspiration behind his art. This event is complimentary for staying guests.
