Boat Captain

Reports into: Director of Boating and Security

Tasks/Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate the boat and ensure that it is operated and crewed according to the Maritime Laws of the Turks and Caicos Islands
  • Abide by the Rules and Regulations of Parrot Cay Resort & COMO Shambhala Retreat
  • Responsible for the safe operating of the boat; in the event of being given orders and he feels it is unsafe or otherwise, he must explain the implications of doing so, and report the matter immediately
  • Navigate and operate boat, using maps, radios, depth finders, radars, lights, buoys, and lighthouses
  • Maintain records of daily activities, personnel reports, ship positions, and movements
  • Maintain all on-board equipment, including machinery, engines, and safety equipment, with regular inspection and report all defects or problems to the Engineer and the Boating Manager's attention without delay
  • Inspect vessels to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment, and conformance to regulations
  • Carry out the full set of Captain pre-sailing checks and ensure that the Engineer checks are done
  • Be an extra eye out for Security reporting any unusual or suspicious movement in and around Parrot Cay
  • Ensure that passengers are properly briefed prior to the vessel departing from port,
  • Any other job-related duties assigned by Boating Manager or other Managers

Key Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Turks & Caicos Islands Boat Operating License
  • Must have a good knowledge of machinery breakdown drills
  • Required to sleep on Parrot Cay to operate the vessel in the event there is an emergency
  • Beginning each shift, you are to check your vessel crew, ensuring the vessel will comply with manning-level requirements and Company safety standards
  • Inspect the vessels for cleanliness and Check the vessels before each shift, (as per daily checks lists). Check deck work practices, external vessel surface, fuel storage, and bunkering practices
  • Ensure the vessel is prepared prior to boarding time, meet and greet the passengers or staff transferring to Parrot Cay or Providenciales
  • Initiate boarding and oversee passenger's numbers on board
  • Ensure staff are boarding after guest
  • Ensure no-un authorized persons are travelling on board the vessel
  • Check bridge equipment and prepare for departure
  • Carry out an introduction of yourself and crew members as well as a life jacket display, along with an explanation of the safety equipment on board.
