About the Artist

Fiona Gavino is an acclaimed Western Australian fibre artist whose practice bridges the realms of traditional basketry and contemporary sculpture. With a background that spans installation, video and printmaking, Gavino is known for her innovative approach to weaving, often working with natural, foraged, and industrial materials to explore themes of place, identity and intercultural dialogue.

With Australian, Filipino and Maori heritage, Gavino’s work is informed by cross-cultural narratives and sustainable making practices. Her practice not only preserves ancient fibre traditions but reinterprets them within a modern sculptural context, positioning her as one of the few practitioners in Australia working at this intersection.
