RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS
We recognise that each COMO location is unique and faces different local challenges and opportunities for sustainability. Yet, the basis for our efforts are the same — a firm belief that we can deliver distinct, memorable experiences for our guests while operating responsibly.
That means whenever you stay at a COMO hotel or resort, you are engaging with our values around environmental stewardship and community engagement, whether you’re feasting on local ingredients at dinner, or enjoying one of our Iconic Experiences, which cultivate deeper engagement and connection with local environments and cultures.
Managing our Footprint
We use sustainable environmental practices to minimise our impact, including innovative technologies and continuous monitoring to reduce consumption, optimise renewable energy sources, and promote water conservation. We also tackle waste with a range of solutions including on-site composting and harnessing local supply chains. To verify our sustainability efforts, we are committed to achieving an EarthCheck sustainability certification for all our properties.
At COMO Point Yamu in Phuket, we use low thermal emissivity glass in all glass features to reduce the amount of heat transmitted into the building. In all cases, technology is merely our first investment. Employee engagement and training are equally important. And guests can choose to participate too — at all our properties, you can choose to re-use towels and linens during your stay. Small gestures, such as shutting windows and sliding doors, also help to conserve energy.
Fostering Community
We prioritise ethical practices, fair labour, and diversity. By hiring locally, providing fair wages, and supporting employee development, we create opportunities that uplift communities and preserve cultural heritage. Our eco-conscious activities and Iconic Experiences are designed to complement local traditions and foster meaningful connections while supporting local economies.
At COMO Uma Paro in Bhutan, we have helped a local female entrepreneur set up Bhutan’s first prayer flag printer and shop. We also celebrate artisanal skills unique to each culture and tradition. At COMO Uma Paro and Punakha, our interiors feature Bhutanese wall art hand-painted by our in-house artist. who also produces one-of-a-kind mementos for our boutique.
In the Maldives, COMO Cocoa Island supports two schools on neighbouring islands through facility and equipment upgrades. We’ve also partnered with our dive operator to give interested local high school students the opportunity to obtain dive certification — a valuable skill for employment in the Maldives.
COMO The Halkin in London extends mentorship to youth while COMO Maalifushi in the Maldives and COMO Uma Ubud in Bali provides scholarships in hospitality training for underprivileged youth. At COMO Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos, we enjoy a fruitful relationship with the local high school, providing funding, job training, industry exposure and building maintenance services.
PROTECTING OUR PLANET
We are heavily invested in reducing waste, cutting carbon emissions, and supporting biodiversity. From minimising single-use plastics to using eco-friendly materials and renewable energy, we strive to protect and enhance the destinations we call home. Our conservation efforts include non-toxic gardening, supporting local ecosystems through initiatives such as marine conservation, and collaborating on global sustainability initiatives with partners who share our values.
Sixty per cent of COMO Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos is minimally developed to preserve the rich biodiversity, especially that of the wetlands and mangroves. At COMO Laucala Island in Fiji, 80 per cent of the island is undeveloped.
Our Bhutanese hotels, COMO Uma Paro and Punakha, cultivate indigenous tree species and work with local authorities in reforestation efforts of local blue pine and cypress trees. COMO Uma Paro is also committed to developing wildflower meadows, organic gardens and more mixed species woodland, using oak, hemlock, fir and maple saplings.
In the Maldives, we partner with the Maldives Marine Research Centre to catalogue sightings of mantas and turtles, as well as to monitor ocean debris. We run a coral propagation programme at both COMO Cocoa Island and COMO Maalifushi, where you can sponsor and install coral frames; you can then follow its progress online after you leave.
At COMO Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos, we take pride in our banana and coconut groves, where our youngest resort guests can plant their own trees and discover native fauna and flora.
