Bangkok’s creative culture has long drawn energy from the meeting of old and new, from textiles and basketry to ceramics and glass. Today, a new generation of Thai designers is looking again at traditional materials and methods, finding new ways for craft to belong in contemporary life. It is in part an argument for slowness: the conviction that an object shaped by hand, over hours rather than seconds, still has a place at the table in our modern world.
It is a conversation that comes into focus at COMO Metropolitan Bangkok this September, when Thai designer Sept KongtanachoQ brings HIZOGA Gallery Studio to the hotel for three months, in a collaboration that is part gallery, part shop and part working studio. It’s a chance for guests to connect directly with Bangkok’s creative culture, encountering both the work and the makers shaping the city’s contemporary craft scene.
KongtanachoQ founded HIZOGA from a fascination with glassmaking and the possibilities of reinterpreting local making traditions through contemporary design. Combining glassblowing techniques with modern methods, she creates pieces that move easily between art and function: sculptural objects and jewellery alongside vessels, drinkware and objects for the home.
For the artist, the individuality of handmade glass is central to its appeal. Each object carries traces of the process behind it, with subtle variations that give an everyday piece its own character. Her work also questions the distinction between something made to be admired and something made to be enjoyed. A drinking glass can be an exploration of colour, proportion and form, while still being designed to be held, filled and used.
From 15th September to 10th January 2027, part of the hotel’s lobby will become a HIZOGA pop-up studio, with handcrafted glassware, jewellery and lifestyle objects for sale, alongside a small collection made exclusively for COMO Metropolitan Bangkok. The COMO collection will include earrings, rings, and pendants, prices available upon request.
On selected dates, KongtanachoQ will work from the pop-up studio, completing the detailing of her pieces in view of guests. The programme also includes creative workshops and, on 15th September, an intimate COMO Conversation exploring KongtanachoQ's creative journey, her approach to craftsmanship and the ideas behind the pieces made for the hotel.
The collaboration also extends to The HIZOGA Experience Bar, set up in the hotel lobby, where a curated drinks menu from COMO Metropolitan Bangkok will be served in HIZOGA glassware. Here, the object moves from display to hand, its weight, shape and colour becoming part of the experience.
The World of HIZOGA Gallery Studio opens at COMO Metropolitan Bangkok on 15th September and runs until 10th January 2027. Pieces are available to purchase exclusively at the hotel. For more information on workshop dates, please contact our concierge or email [email protected].
