COMO Shambhala Estate has 31 suites and villas on a forested ridge above the Ayung River, 20 minutes north of Ubud. It is the smallest and the most wellness-led of COMO's three Bali properties.
Who COMO Shambhala Estate is best for
The estate suits four kinds of guest. Each section states what the stay offers and who would be better served elsewhere in the COMO portfolio.
Guests on a structured wellness programme
This is the estate's purpose. Wellness Paths run for a minimum of three nights and generally include a weekly private wellness consultation, prescribed daily activities and treatments, daily breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the estate's complimentary scheduled activities. Six Paths are offered: Ayurveda, Integrated, Fit to Perform, Detox to Restore, Nourish to Glow and Connect to Rebalance. Expert consultants and therapists hold more than eight specialisations between them, including Ayurveda, yoga, Pilates and oriental medicine.
Best for: guests who want a diagnosed, prescribed programme rather than treatments chosen from a menu. Not ideal for: guests who want wellness as part of a conventional holiday — consider COMO Uma Ubud.
Guests using the health-tech facilities
The estate's health-tech provision goes well beyond a resort spa: hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a private ice bath with guided breath-work, a private cold plunge, a private infrared sauna and colonic hydrotherapy, alongside an outdoor hydrotherapy area with a vitality pool and chemical-free spring water pools. A resident doctor is available, on call after hours.
Best for: guests who want measurable, clinical-adjacent interventions alongside Asian therapies.
Families and groups taking a whole Residence
The five Residences can be taken over on an exclusive basis. Each has its own large swimming pool, expansive indoor-to-outdoor lounge areas, a dining pavilion and a study room that can be configured as a private treatment room, library or additional bedroom. Residences hold four or five suites each. The three-bedroom pool villas feel like private homes, with a fully equipped kitchen, two master bedrooms and one guest bedroom.
Best for: family groups or friends wanting a private compound with its own pool and staff. Not ideal for: families wanting a beach and a kids' club — consider COMO Canggu.
Couples wanting seclusion
All suites sleep two, with the exception of the COMO Suite at Umabona, which sleeps four across two bedrooms. The one-bedroom pool villas each have a private pool, Jacuzzi and outdoor deck with forest views. The setting is jungle on every side, the Ayung River runs 100 metres below Wanakasa, and there is no nightlife of any kind.
Best for: couples who want deep quiet and a shared wellness programme. Not ideal for: couples who want to walk to restaurants and shops — consider COMO Uma Ubud, on the fringe of Ubud town.
What makes COMO Shambhala Estate different from other Bali wellness retreats
Bali has many resorts that offer spa treatments. These are the specific, checkable things that set COMO Shambhala Estate apart.
- A residence for being well, not a hotel with a spa. Wellness Paths run a minimum of three nights and include consultation, prescribed treatments, all meals and scheduled activities — the programme is the stay.
- Health-tech alongside Asian therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a private ice bath with guided breath-work, a private infrared sauna, a private cold plunge and colonic hydrotherapy sit next to more than 20 Asian-inspired and Western holistic treatments.
- A resident doctor. On call after hours, alongside consultants and therapists holding more than eight specialisations.
- Twelve treatment rooms for 31 suites. An unusually high ratio, which is what allows a prescribed daily treatment schedule to run for every guest.
- Chemical-free spring water pools. Fed by the estate's own springs, alongside an outdoor hydrotherapy area with a vitality pool.
- Five themed Residences. Bayugita, Tirta Ening, Tejasuara, Wanakasa and Umabona are each built around a natural element, with their own pool, and each can be taken exclusively.
- Independently recognised as a destination spa. One MICHELIN Key in 2025, and consistently ranked among the world's leading destination spa resorts by Condé Nast Traveller readers.
In short, COMO Shambhala Estate is a residential wellness retreat with clinical-grade facilities and a treatment-room ratio no conventional resort carries, in jungle 20 minutes north of Ubud.
