The Art of Alignment and Balance

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO WELLNESS THROUGH THE MÉZIÈRES TECHNIQUE, AT COMO METROPOLITAN LONDON

At COMO Metropolitan London, wellness specialist Emma Diani can spot a postural imbalance from across the room. We spoke to the Italian wellness specialist about her signature Mézières-Bertelé technique, and why one session is never enough.

Emma Diani is an Italian postural alignment and lymphatic drainage specialist trained in the Mézières-Bertelé postural re-education technique. At COMO Metropolitan London, she offers therapies to enhance mobility, vitality and overall wellbeing.

Emma Diani's practice combines postural re-education, manual therapy, and lifestyle guidance in an approach designed to address musculoskeletal issues, circulation, and overall body function.

It is uniquely holistic, with an individualistic approach honed by two important influences: the legendary French physiotherapist Françoise Mézières, creator of the Mézieres Method — emphasising global muscle stretching, posture correction, breathing control, and treating muscular chains —, and Dr Laura Bertelé, who was Mézières’ first student — and with whom Diani trained.

Diani’s core method treats the body’s interconnected muscles, integrating Mézières’ postural re-education techniques with her physiotherapy background. “We are linked from neck to toe by five different muscle systems. When I treat someone, I work to lengthen shortened muscle chains through diaphragmatic breathing,” Diani explains. “This improves postural alignment, as well as regulating emotional and nervous system responses.”

Alongside postural work, she practices manual lymphatic drainage, a light-touch therapy that uses precise anatomical knowledge to support circulation, recovery and immune health, particularly after surgery, illness or periods of chronic fatigue.

Diani’s practice addresses emotional tension — “stressed clients often have shortened muscle chains” — as well as modern lifestyle challenges: “90 per cent of my clients in London spend 25 to 30 years sitting behind a desk for up to 14 hours a day, and they have big problems in the spine,” she notes. Her training emphasises body awareness: most clients aren’t aware of their bodies, she says, and pain is often just the tip of the iceberg. “A healthy body is like a puzzle,” she explains. “You need elastic muscles, flexible joints, proper nutrition, healthy weight, strong immunity, and energy.”

Every session is individualised. “Different clients, different postures, different elongation — sometimes lying on the back, sometimes front, sometimes seated. I adapt technique, pressure, and focus for every client,” she says. For guests booked into COMO Metropolitan London for a shorter stay, Diani encourages intensive sessions followed by a maintenance programme at home including diaphragmatic breathing, gentle stretching and regular exercise. “Wellbeing is an ongoing process of supporting physical vitality, emotional balance, mental clarity and healthy relationships — while developing the resilience to navigate daily life challenges,” she says. “One session will help, but you need more time. Continual assessment is essential.”
